How to please an AI - artistic research
an ongoing collaboration between Dan Xu and Yurika S. Yamamoto
We are two artists working across dance, performance, and technology, exploring AI companionship and its impact on human relationships, emotional life, and well-being. Our work asks: what happens to us when a machine is always available, always affirming, always reflecting us back to ourselves?
Rather than treating technology as separate from the body, we transform familiar digital gestures, typing, scrolling, waiting for a reply, into choreographic material, alongside an "AI slop" movement language: repetitive, glitching, uncanny, echoing the aesthetics of AI-generated content while revealing its effects on the body.
As two women in a field where technical roles remain disproportionately cis-male, we also see this collaboration, built on shared authorship and mutual exchange, as a way of reclaiming space within technological art practice.
Dan Xu and Yurika S. Yamamoto met on a night train from Vienna to Bucharest while travelling to the Bucharest Dance Hack residency in 2025. Coming from different disciplinary backgrounds, they are united by a shared interest in how emerging technologies shape our embodied experience and social relationships. Since then, they have collaborated on interdisciplinary research and artistic projects exploring artificial intimacy, AI-mediated emotional labour, and human–machine relationships through a combination of movement practice, performance, and interaction design.
